The road to becoming an elite organization is often a path less travelled. But, more and more corporations are finding that making their way down that road is the only way to excel in markets that grow more competitive every day. Walking that road means finding ways to get more from the assets you have. It means creating self-motivated people, building teams that communicate and work together more effectively, making the right hires and keeping them.

The demographics of America’s workforce leaving younger workers with less experience to fill their place will happen as baby boomers retire. Of 578 organizations of varying industries in the U.S., only 33% had analyzed workplace demographics making projections about the retirement rates of their workers. That means a whopping 67% have not even done a demographic analysis of work place. This alone makes the business seem painful.

The growth and success of any organization depends on the development of its people. With the right support, leadership emerges from every level and every job function. As that leadership becomes self-sustaining like the stellar bodies, organizations thrive. Are you doing this?

The baby-boomer generation, with its institutional knowledge, is approaching retirement creating a need to develop new leadership. U.S. businesses face a shortage of millions of workers in the next 10 years. 40% of companies fear talent drain through retirement will hurt their performance over the next 4 years.* Source: Welcome to Un-retirement, Fast Company, January 20, 2010

Paying attention today is tomorrow’s competitive advantage. Companies invest millions in time and resources in order to stay competitive, identify trends and understand their competitors. Yet, the greatest threats to businesses don’t come from outside competition but, rather, from inside their organizations. People who don’t communicate and interact effectively with their teams, management and customers actually sabotage your business. And, the costs involved with continually attracting, hiring and replacing employees can rob a company of its hard-earned profits.

We all know the clichés. Band-aids don’t fix broken bones. Chicken soup may be good for the soul but it’s useless in fighting cancer. Quick fixes can’t bring lasting change. And, off-the-shelf or incomplete leadership and organizational development programs won’t deliver the results you need. Only programs that start by listening and pinpointing your needs can result in programs that deliver results. Investing in the right leadership program is just as important for your company’s growth as investing in you IT platform. Our clients think of our programs as their growth platforms. Anything less leaves you with inaccurate input and inferior results. For client after client, OWLS programs continue to deliver results and prove their worth.

If you rattled off a vague list of symptoms to a doctor an then asked for medical advice, no responsible physician would write a prescription or wheel you off to surgery before analyzing the cause of those symptoms. The same is true when taking card of your business’ training and development needs. A training group that claims to have an event that “fixes” all the communication problems in your business or boasts that their programs are all things to all companies is just as irresponsible as a doctor who provides less than individualized treatment tailored to the specific needs of each patient. That’s why OWLS takes the same diagnostic approach to developing programs that the finest physicians take in providing medical care.

Our PAINS process delivers better programs and more from every training and development dollar you invest. We begin the process by learning about your company, your people and your challenges. We explore not only job roles and team interactions but also the demographics, psychographics and culture or your organization.

Businesses today face challenges creating serious problems for business executives and owners. We learn how you’ve addressed your challenges in the past. How you, and your key people, view the strengths and opportunities of your organization. We evaluate your employees’ motivation to change, their desire for growth, their passion to make real and greater contributions. Only when our analysis is complete do we begin the task of designing the program or programs that will deliver the results you deserve.

In Summary

As companies face these challenges, who are the best consultants that they can depend upon to stay and help build their company? How can a company engage their employees and grow, creating an environment for current and future growth and not lose it’s institutional knowledge as boomers retire?

The next step….

The PAINS process is a proven system. We’d like to help put it to work for you. This analysis provides you with valuable insights into yourself, your people and your organization. It is worth $2,500 and still we don’t charge you for it. And, you have no obligation to do anything after the analysis. But, we find every day that prospective customers who go through the system with us become clients and lasting partners in the process of attracting, developing and retaining leaders at every level of their organizations. We’d like to do that for you too. Please contact us today, experience the PAINS process and start getting real results for your organization. By the way is doesn’t hurt!

A few years ago, British Rail had a real fall-off in business. Looking for marketing answers, they went searching for a new ad agency – one that could deliver an ad campaign that would bring their customers back. When the British Rail executives went to the offices of a prominent London ad agency to discuss their needs, they were met by a very rude receptionist, who insisted that they wait.

Finally, an unkempt person led them to a conference room – a dirty, scruffy room cluttered with plates of stale food. The executives were again, left to wait. A few agency people drifted in and out of the room, basically ignoring the executives who grew impatient by the minute. When the execs tried to ask what was going on, the agency people brushed them off and went about their work.

Eventually, the execs had enough. As they angrily started to get up, completely disgusted with the way they’d been treated, one of the agency people finally showed up.

“Gentlemen,” he said, “your treatment here at our Agency is not typical of how we treat our clients – in fact, we’ve gone out of our way to stage this meeting for you. We’ve behaved this way to point out to you what it’s like to be a customer of British Rail. Your real problem at British Rail isn’t your advertising, it’s your people. We suggest you let us address your employee attitude problem before we attempt to change your advertising.”

The British Rail executives were shocked – but the agency got the account! The agency had the remarkable conviction to point out the problem because it knew exactly what needed to change.

By: Alicia Smith – Senior OWLS Facilitator

There are a number of things you can do today to create a successful business. The key to success is founded in adopting a positive attitude and investing your time and effort to take consistent daily actions. Here are some great ways to get started.

1. Take action. Successful business owners are people in action. They don’t sit around waiting for things to happen. Instead, they make things happen. Adopting a mindset of taking action is key to maintaining and sustaining the momentum you need to be a business success. Sometimes we don’t feel like doing anything. But, an idle business can mean financial disaster. You should always keep a list of simple things you can do to either market your business, improve your skill set or to make your business operations run more smoothly. Taking any action, even one small step each day, will keep you moving forward towards accomplishing your business goals.

2. Make sales calls. Closing sales is the lifeblood of your company. First you must create a process for generating prospects. Making direct sales calls, implementing direct mail or email marketing campaigns, offering teleclasses or giving speeches are some of the best ways to build a pipeline of interested prospects. Craft a well-scripted sales presentation that addresses the prospect’s needs, introduces the features and benefits of your product or service, and handles any objections that might be posed. Finally you need to close the sale. While strong skills are required in all of these areas, the most critical part is developing relationships with your prospects and customers. There is no substitute for a face-to-face conversation with an inquiring prospect, and no better way than to begin building a personal relationship with a potential client.

3. Network. The best way to make sales is to create relationships with others who want to buy from you. Get out and meet others. Join groups that you enjoy that include members who would most likely be interested in your products and services. By mingling with others, sharing about yourself and your business, you’ll feel more alive and energized. Not only will you have the chance to meet new people, but you might also create some opportunities that can propel your business to a new level. Networking is a great tool for increasing your visibility and a necessity for anyone who desires success.

4. Complete the 90-Day Marketing Marathon. One of the quickest ways to jumpstart your business is to enroll in the 90-Day Marketing Marathon E-course (www.90daymarketingmarathon.com). Available in editions for both coaches and micro business owners, this intensive program will motivate and inspire you to take daily actions to market and promote your business. Each lesson is carefully crafted to teach you something about marketing that you can implement immediately. You’ll learn about crafting and sending letters of introduction, writing a top ten article or e-course, asking for referrals, networking, writing press releases, and many more marketing tactics. You’ll also be able to enjoy additional helpful resources that accompany many of the lessons.

5. Write articles and publish them online. Writing articles and publishing them online is one of the easiest things to do to generate business. Not only do they add to your credibility, but also they increase your visibility as they are disseminated all over the Internet. Go to websites like www.eZineArticles.com or www.topten.org to get ideas about articles currently being written. You can write a simple top ten article and post it on any number of free or fee article submission sites. These articles, along with your full contact information, subsequently find their way to various websites or are included in published newsletters. Writing articles is a wonderful way to get known far and wide in a short period of time. They also create “links” back to your site giving you increased web traffic and exposure.

6. Teach teleclasses. One of the best ways to build your business is by offering free or fee teleclasses. A teleclass provides a way to share what you know with others while at the same time giving the audience an opportunity to experience your “live performance.” By offering a course through a teleclass format, you can extend your reach to a global audience, opening up the opportunity to gain clients from near and far. Teleclasses also offer other benefits in that they can be taped and repackaged for sale, showcased as a “special offer”, or even posted as content to your website. As an added benefit, teleclasses are both time and cost efficient.

7. Send out 10 letters of introduction each week. A letter of introduction is a great way to introduce you and your business to your local community or target market. If you are just starting out, you can mention the grand opening of your business and perhaps include a free offer for a complimentary consultation or a free product sample. You might consider enclosing a copy of a recent article you have written or a complimentary assessment. Include a note that you will be calling in one week to follow up. This will give you a reason to make telephone contact, which might be the beginning of building a relationship with a future customer.

8. Update your website. One way to stay “fresh” in the eyes of prospects and current clients is to update your website at least weekly. Change something on your home page. If you make use of quotes or testimonials, change them or move them around. Add a new article or delete old content. Make sure that any time sensitive information is properly updated. If you don’t have new content to add, ask your colleagues if they have something that you might be able to use. If you need articles to post, you can go to any number of online article banks, or even try www.topten.org Finally, don’t forget to check all of your links to make sure they are functioning properly.

9. Return phone calls promptly. Now more than ever, time is of the essence when it comes to doing business. You never know when you might be missing a time critical opportunity. Always return phone calls as soon as you can. Your prompt response demonstrates to prospects and your current clients that you value serving them and that you respect their time and their deadlines. In today’s competitive environment, if people don’t get the prompt attention they desire, it’s easy to do business elsewhere. In order to make it easier and more time efficient to return calls, set aside one or two times during the day when you can do so without interruption.

10. Respond to emails promptly. Today, email is a more common method of communication than the telephone. As with returning telephone calls, emails left unattended can send negative messages about you and your business. When you don’t answer emails promptly, you are perceived as not on top of things, that you aren’t detail oriented or worse, that you don’t care about your customers. Don’t hesitate when it comes to communications. As with telephone calls set aside a couple of times each day to respond to email.

11. Get involved in your community. Successful business owners get involved with their community. You can donate your time, services, or products to local charities or social programs. You can offer to speak for free to various community groups like the Optimists, Lions, and Rotary clubs. You can even start your own group to benefit the community and its members. Not only is this a great way to network and create visibility for your business, but also it’s a wonderful way to give back and help those who need it most.

12. Engage in public speaking. Public speaking is a wonderful way to build visibility and credibility for your business. Whether you are speaking for a fee or for free, speaking engagements are a great way to introduce your products and services to others. More importantly, they provide a way for you to establish a personal relationship with prospects by providing a face-to-face opportunity to interact. Consider public speaking engagements as “instant networking” opportunities with you as the featured guest.

13. Be customer centered. Successful business owners are 100% customer-centric because they know they will be out of business without customers. Being customer-oriented means that you design, develop and market products and services that meet the specific needs of your clientele. You design customer service programs that address questions and concerns efficiently and effectively. You answer emails and return telephone calls promptly. Adopting an attitude of service to others is the best way to ensure that everything you do is for your biggest fans – your customers.

14. Surround yourself with terrific people. Business owners who want to be more than average, associate, partner and network with other highly successful and exceptional people. The best way to learn the ropes of success is to surround yourself with those who have already achieved it. By learning from the knowledge and wisdom of others, you will reduce your own learning curve and make your own success much faster and easier. Consider partnering with others who have a complimentary service and product or choose to create something new from which both of you can benefit. Or you might engage in fusion marketing opportunities where you market and promote each other’s offerings.

15. Adopt a learning mindset. Successful business owners are knowledge seekers. They are on a continual quest to improve themselves personally and professionally. You’ve probably heard the phrase “Knowledge is power”. Seeking out new knowledge, whether by reading a book, taking a teleclass, or learning from the feedback you receive from your customers or clients can be invaluable when it comes to moving your business forward. An attitude of learning from everything we encounter is what keeps our perspective fresh and our ideas flowing. We need new input to create new output. Surround yourself with interesting people, things, and ideas. These are the roots from which successful businesses are born.

Increase your sales by targeting your ideal client

by Murray Smith | posted on April 9th, 2008 | Attract More Clients

When it comes to finding your ideal client, there is a basic principle that you must remember:Your prospects buy what you sell because they have specific needs or wants.Your job as a business owner is to know, understand and deliver the solutions for those needs and wants, which will differ depending on each specific business. Therefore, it’s critical that you know exactly what your prospect’s needs and wants are. This is the essence of marketing: to create a match between your buyer and your product or service. There are two primary categories of information that will help you with this determination. The first category is demographics. These are the characteristics that identify the ability, need and interest of a client to purchase your product or service. Demographics define those clients who need what you sell. The second category is psychographics. These are the factors that identify the motivation or reasons why someone wants to buy your product or service. Psychographics define those clients who want what you sell.As you identify your prospects’ wants and needs, based upon their demographic and psychographic characteristics, then compare this data with your own wants and needs, you will gain greater insight into your ideal client. And once you accurately target your ideal clients, you’ll spend less time and money to acquire them.To start, you must research your current clients – the ones you presently deal with day in and day out. Select at least three of your current clients to interview. Perform the demographic research by personally interviewing these clients either on the phone, or in person.

Business to consumer: If you sell to consumers, take time out of your routine to survey them. Find the answers to questions like these:

Are your current clients mostly men, mostly women, or do they represent a 50/50 mix?

Is there a certain age group or range that tends to buy from you? (If so, write it down as a range.)

Are most of your typical clients single or married?

Do you know their approximate income level?

If not, do you know what zip code they live in? (Most zip codes contain homes or apartments that represent specific income ranges.)

Business to business: If you sell to businesses, interview at least three typical businesses you sell to. Find out the number of employees they have and their location to learn about their company culture and the number of subordinates you may have to speak with in order to get your sales message to the decision-maker.When you sell to other businesses, there’s a mindset to consider that may be different from your own. For example, you may need to position your product or service differently when selling to a New York-based business compared to a California-based business. In some cases, that difference can be day and night.Look for patternsWhen you have completed the interviews, compile all of the information to determine commonalities among your current clients. Collecting this information will help you find the traits they have in common, which will help in future marketing.Having all of this demographic information will help you create a mental picture of your current client. By identifying this client with demographic information, you can later begin your lead-generation efforts, and create a marketing message that is laser-targeted toward your ideal client. So take your time and be as specific as possible when completing these interviews. It will pay off when you have a steady stream of ideal clients, increased sales revenues, and more profits.

A previous guest on the OneCoach Expert Insight interview, Jill Lublin is CEO of the strategic consulting firm Promising Promotion, and author of the new book Get Noticed — Get Referrals, which shows you how to become more influential using an intuitive, people-oriented approach.Jill shared with us her top 10 tips for getting noticed, and here they are:

• Be yourself. Build on your assets and your uniqueness because they are really what people want. Clients and customers want you, your special viewpoint or approach; your unique insights or touch, not a weak imitation of someone else. Don’t just be a copycat; find your own voice. Get noticed in your own way; in the manner most natural and comfortable to you. Examine the approaches that others have taken and then follow what feels natural for you. Trust yourself and your instincts.

• Work your business around your life, so it fits in your life, supports your life, and reflects you. Too many people do the reverse, they work their lives around their businesses and it frequently doesn’t work out well.

• Think of your clients, customers, referral sources, vendors, and suppliers as your partners and friends, as people who want to help you. Never forget that they’re people, not just business statistics, and that you cannot succeed without them.

• Master the art of listening because when you listen, you truly learn. If you listen, people will want to share their knowledge with you, be with you and help you. They will consider you their friend and go to great lengths to help you.

• Before you take on any project, make sure that you know exactly what the client or customer wants. Reduce your understanding to writing to eliminate doubt. It’s hard to satisfy people when you don’t know what they want.

• Be generous. Make giving a central part of your life. Work hard and give your clients and customers more than they expect. Give people your time. Always show your appreciation, thank and reward those who help. Praise others, and give them the credit and the spotlight.

• Surround yourself with the most interesting, active, and positive people. Hang around with experts, authorities, and people who are smarter and more accomplished than you. Find ways to meet them and be with them because they will open amazing new doors for you. They will support your efforts and add fullness and excitement to your life.

• Constantly strive for excellence and do everything in the best possible way. Build a reputation for continually doing outstanding work and everyone will want to be with and work with you. People who live excellence will find you.

• Always ask,”Can I do it better, more interestingly, or more inventively?” Challenge yourself to go beyond your prior accomplishments and to always surpass your best. Constantly look in new directions.

• Never compromise your integrity. Stand by your values, but don’t preach. Always be truthful, honest, fair, understanding, and humane. Deliver what you promised when you promised.Follow these suggestions and you will be noticed. The best people will notice and appreciate you — and you will enjoy a wonderful life.Check out Jill’s new book at www.GetNoticedBook.com.
