Management and Motivation
Managing today is a complex, multi-faceted task. A good manager
needs to “wear many hats” and wear them well! The
manager must keep track of all elements under his or her direction,
as well as control and respond quickly and effectively when required.
Management techniques without people sensitivity can become cold
and negative. Humanistic management concepts can become too soft,
too diplomatic and nonproductive. The combination of these two
management philosophies can give us the best of both worlds: tough,
result-oriented management with people sensitivity. In effect,
we are placing the iron fist of management by objectives in the
velvet glove of sensitivity and motivation. More than ever, managers
need to have flexibility in management as opposed to a rigid way
of dealing with people and situations. The end result can be action-oriented
management that responds to people from a basic psychological
need viewpoint. Often, the productivity of the team can greatly
increase.
In essence, the cultural orientation can become one of pride
and mutual trust. Managers must do what works! To achieve this
end is a challenge for managers. As you increase your range of
choices, you increase the likelihood of successfully “Building
Organizational Excellence.”
